Why choose Prof Mohammed Muhtaseb?
World-class care, tailored to you
Professor Mohammed Muhtaseb is a highly-skilled surgeon and a globally recognised expert in the field. Every patient receives world-class treatment, delivered using state-of-the-art technology and advanced techniques.
His ethos is to provide the very best care, meticulously tailored to each patient’s unique requirements and lifestyle.
The surgeon trusted by surgeons
Professor Muhtaseb’s unparalleled expertise is reflected by his peers, who frequently refer complex and challenging cases to him.
His results and reputation are so well-regarded that he often treats medical professionals and the parents and relatives of optometrists in South Wales. He is dedicated to achieving optimal outcomes, even in the most difficult surgical scenarios.
Pioneering safety and quality
Professor Muhtaseb made a major contribution to improving surgical safety when he developed and published the first peer-reviewed cataract risk stratification system in 2004.
This system is widely used globally to enable personalised risk assessment and individualised surgical plans, aiding surgeons in mitigating risks. Furthermore, he developed the CLEARlog software to track quality, safety data, and patient satisfaction, ensuring a commitment to continuous improvement in care.
Educating the next generation of specialists
Professor Muhtaseb is a dedicated teacher and mentor, training junior surgeons on their journey to becoming independent consultants–many of his former trainees are now successful consultants across the UK and overseas.
He also provides essential education and support to optometrists, ensuring patients receive optimal pre- and post-operative aftercare. As an active clinical researcher, he regularly presents his findings at prestigious international meetings, keeping his practice at the cutting edge of vision science.
First-to-market visionary
Professor Muhtaseb has a long history of leading innovation in the UK. In 2008, he was the first surgeon in Wales to perform the advanced DSEK corneal endothelial transplant surgery.
He was also the first to introduce superior lens implants to the UK and South Wales, such as the HOYA Gemetric trifocal lens, giving patients a full range of vision without glasses. Furthermore, he was the first in Wales to publish extensive clinical results on IntraCorneal Rings (INTACS SK) for keratoconus treatment.
Lower Complication Rates
Prof Muhtaseb is pleased to report a personal rate of Posterior Capsule Rupture (PCR) which is significantly lower than the national average for consultants, reflecting high standard of surgical safety in his practice.
The National Ophthalmology Database website (nodaudit.org.uk) states the following about PCR:
PCR is the most important intraoperative complication and when it occurs as defined above, there is a 6 fold increased risk of vision loss, a 40 fold increased risk of post cataract retinal detachment and an 8 fold increased risk of endophthalmitis. Although PCR as defined may occasionally be unavoidable it is generally accepted as an indicator of surgical quality.
It follows that these risks to patients are reduced by over 75% in Prof Muhtaseb’s practice compared to national benchmarks.
Dedicated to patient outcomes
Prof Muhtaseb understands the value of technology and data in driving improvements in patient care. To this end he developed CLEARlog, a software and App that is used by surgeons around to the world to track their surgical safety and quality in order to drive improvements in standard of care.
Hear from our patients
I think what I really valued in the consultation was an honest assessment of the benefits and also the risks so I went into the surgery literally with my eyes wide open about the high probability of success but also that there would be some changes to the sight I had. I have to say the surgery was very quick and pain-free. I had a little bit of discomfort during the day of the surgery but that disappeared very quickly and I was able to really have a a normal life from then on. It’s been incredibly liberating to wake up in the morning and be able to see without reaching for my glasses.
“No. 1 – My advice would be do it. No. 2 – See Mohammed if you can. I made the decision to not go down the NHS route because I wanted to see the best consultant – probably in the UK… It was absolutely worth it… because you can’t really put a price on your sight.”
“I don’t wear glasses at all now. I don’t need them. I was impressed by his professionalism, his calmness. He explained everything clearly and in layman’s language… I would say to anyone considering treatment: just do it. Don’t be afraid of it. It’s painless and it works.”
“I can’t speak highly enough of (Prof Muhtaseb). Nothing was too much trouble, you could phone anytime, day or night. I wish I had done it when I first started wearing reading glasses and just gone to Prof Muhtaseb then and got it done. I would do it all over again, but do it much faster.”
“I would definitely recommend the professor. I think his approach is perfect! If you have any anxieties at all – just check with someone who’s had the procedure done. I had no pain at all. I expected a little bit of discomfort – but no pain, that was good. It’s life-enhancing and that’s not something you can put clearly enough. I didn’t realise how green the trees were! It’s lovely!”
