Amblyopia Treatment (Bynocs) in South Wales

Non-invasive amblyopia treatment: effective therapy for children & adults to improve vision & regain binocular balance.

What is amblyopia?

Amblyopia, commonly known as “lazy eye,” is a vision development disorder where one eye fails to achieve normal visual acuity, even with prescription glasses or contact lenses. This condition typically arises during early childhood when the brain favours one eye over the other, leading to reduced vision in the affected eye. If left untreated, amblyopia can result in permanent vision impairment in one eye.

Until now, it has not been possible to treat amblyopia after the age of 8 years. In childhood, treatments can include using spectacles, eye patching, squint surgery and other methods. But treatments are ineffective beyond early childhood. Bynocs is a new approach that gives hope for patients that they may gain vision in an eye that previously could not see very well.

What is Bynocs treatment?

Bynocs offers an innovative, non-invasive treatment for amblyopia using a method called dichoptic therapy. This approach involves presenting different images to each eye through specialized software, encouraging the brain to use both eyes together and improve binocular vision. The therapy is delivered via engaging digital games and activities, making it suitable for both children and adults.

How long does amblyopia treatment usually last?

The duration of amblyopia treatment varies depending on the individual’s age, severity of the condition, and the type of therapy used. Traditional childhood treatments like patching may require several months to years.

Bynocs therapy typically involves daily sessions over a period of 4 to 6 weeks, though some individuals may require longer.

Amblyopia FAQs

Who can benefit from Bynocs treatment?

Bynocs treatment is suitable for both children and adults with amblyopia.

Can amblyopia be corrected in adults?

Yes, recent advancements in vision therapy have shown that amblyopia can be treated in adults. While the condition was once thought to be irreversible past childhood, Bynocs has demonstrated improvements in visual acuity and binocular function in adult patients.

What causes amblyopia?

Amblyopia can result from several factors that disrupt normal visual development, including:
Strabismus: Misalignment of the eyes, leading the brain to ignore input from one eye.

Refractive errors: Significant differences in prescription between the two eyes (anisometropia) can cause the brain to favor one eye over the other.

Visual deprivation: Conditions like cataracts or ptosis that obstruct vision in one eye during early development.

These factors can prevent the brain from forming a strong connection with the affected eye, leading to amblyopia.

“I can’t speak highly enough of (Prof Muhtaseb). Nothing was too much trouble, you could phone anytime, day or night. I wish I had done it when I first started wearing reading glasses and just gone to Prof Muhtaseb then and got it done. I would do it all over again, but do it much faster.”

Ann Edworthy
Refractive Cataract Surgery & Piggyback Lenses

“I would definitely recommend the professor. I think his approach is perfect! If you have any anxieties at all – just check with someone who’s had the procedure done. I had no pain at all. I expected a little bit of discomfort – but no pain, that was good. It’s life-enhancing and that’s not something you can put clearly enough. I didn’t realise how green the trees were! It’s lovely!”
